Recipe Makes: 8 bagels*
Prep: 2 hrs 30 minutes
Bake: 15 – 20 minutes
Total Time: 2 hrs 50 min
INGREDIENTS FOR BAGEL:
1 ¼ cup warm milk (100F-115F)
2 tbsp sour cream
2 tbsp + 2 tsp vegetable oil
**1 tbsp honey
1 large egg
3 ½ cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
***2 ½ tsp instant yeast
INGREDIENTS FOR EGG WASH:
1 large egg
1 tsp water
desired toppings (I used toasted sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and everything bagel seasoning)
DIRECTIONS:
- In a large measuring cup or bowl, add milk, sour cream, vegetable oil, and honey. Stir well. Heat in microwave for about 1 min or until 100-115 F, use a food thermometer to check. Once in desired range whisk in egg.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour, salt, and instant yeast. Whisk until well combined.
- Carefully add in your warm liquid mixture and kneed the dough until well combined and then for 5 minuets. Dough should be soft but not sticking to the bowl.
- Cover with clear wrap and place in warm location to rise for 1 hr.
- On a well floured surface, dump out the dough and split into 8 equal sections. Take each section and roll it together. Then press your thumbs into the center and stretch until a hole appears, creating dough into bagel shape. Let bagels rise uncovered for 1 hr.
- Preheat over to 375 F while you’re getting the egg wash ready.
- While the bagels are rising create your egg wash. In a small ramekin, beat together 1 egg and water. Brush onto bagel with basting brush and sprinkle your desired toppings.
- Bake at 375 F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. And ENJOY!

*I doubled the recipe in the pictures.
**You can use sugar instead. Substitute the same amount but add it to the dry ingredients instead of wet.
***Or you can use 1 tbsp active dry yeast but read this article on how to switch instant for active dry.
CAN THE BAGELS BE FROZEN?
Yes! We freeze ours all the time. I would recommend keeping them in the freezer for no more than 1 month and to slice them beforehand. I heat them up in the toaster and add some cream cheese, and they taste amazing. You would never be able to tell that they were frozen.
